Masters in Public Relations with New Media Student

Hey there!

My name is Megan or Meg for short. I have just finished my undergrad in Marketing after four years and now I am currently undergoing a Masters in Public Relations and New Media. I have learned skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation and various technical skills. While studying Marketing, I particularly enjoyed the marketing communications, event management, consumer behavior and public relations modules.

I’ve always had a keen interest in Public Relations and Event Management. With the skills I have acquired over the past number of years from hobbies and college, I felt this was the best road for me to take. I have also completed a Fetac level 5 with the YMCA in youth leadership and youth participation.

Throughout my college life, I was super involved with college societies which earned me the title of Best Individual at BICS 2015 and Most Improved Society at BICS 2014 for C.I.T Music Society. CIT Music Society also won Best Society stand at CIT Societies Day 2015 and CIT Best Society 2015

BICS are the national society awards. Society awards would take place in a person’s own college/ university. Those who win, typically go on to compete on a national level. For more information on the BICS awards, click here.

I was the Public Relations Officer for Music Society in 2012-2013 and Chairperson from 2013- 2015. I then stepped down to help a new committee run the society and bring some fresh ideas to the table. I was also the Twitter Curator for the Photographic Society, photographer at various college events and presented CIT News, fashions shows and the Battle of the Bands competitions.

I have learned many transferable skills from my involvement with societies such as leadership, delegation, time-keeping and resilience. I feel in order to become a well- rounded individual, you need to branch out in college and not just go to classes alone. My presentation skills have drastically improved! Not because of in class presentations but because of endlessly speaking to large crowds of sometimes unfamiliar faces, which in turn, aided with these in class presentations.

In my free time outside of college, I am a volunteer with my local YMCA in Cork City helping with event management, public relations and fundraising from time to time. I have also volunteered for the Irish Cancer Society for Daffodil Day, Indiependence Music Festival and for the Cork Midsummer Festival covering the festival’s various events on their social media channels.

My hobbies include surfing, bowling, foosball, traveling, photography and roller derby. I play roller derby with the Cork City Firebirds and am part of the PR and Media committee mainly managing the twitter account.
